SafeXCity

The SafeXCity proposal is designed to improve the safety of Vulnerable Road Users like pedestrians and cyclists in urban areas by using timely applications and services. This is achieved by utilizing Connected Vehicles, Vehicle-to-Everything communication, mobility sensors, and Mixed Reality interfaces to identify potential hazards in real time and immediately alert Vulnerable Road Users to ensure their safety. The SafeXCity will enable the concept of tactile internet, providing solutions to the challenges introduced by Extended Reality (EX) scenarios, in terms of networks and service orchestration where time is an important requirement. The project will be implemented in Aveiro, Portugal, through the Aveiro Tech City Living Lab and involves the integration of both autonomous and non-autonomous vehicles, edge computing, and city infrastructure to facilitate quick and synchronised communication necessary for timely safety measures.

Additional Information:

Technical Solution (i.e. development, integration,…): SafeXCity extends ITS-G5 with private 5G (Band 78) and XR to protect VRUs. Vehicles, sensors, and edge computing enable real-time hazard detection. Using HoloLens 2, VRUs visualise vehicles beyond line-of-sight and interact with autonomous vehicles in low-latency scenarios.

Legal Aspects (any Specific regulation): The autonomous vehicle operates in an authorised Free Authorised Technology Zone. The project has approval from the national telecommunications regulator to use a private 5G network in Band 78. All activities comply with applicable safety, spectrum, and data protection regulations.

Solution Implementation Hardware: The system integrates an autonomous vehicle, connected vehicles, Pixkit platform, private 5G Band 78 infrastructure with cablefree antennas based on amarisoft, edge computing nodes, city sensors, and Microsoft HoloLens 2 devices to support low-latency communication and XR-based VRU safety services.

Linked Products (components/parts): SafeXCity leverages Microsoft HoloLens 2 for XR interfaces, cablefree 5G antennas for flexible connectivity, the Pixkit platform for data integration and processing, and the autonomous vehicle platform for VRU-vehicle interaction and cooperative safety scenarios.
