AMBIENT-6G

Smart Bridge Health Monitoring

This use case addresses the need for continuous, reliable monitoring of bridges, which are exposed to various stressors like traffic loads, environmental wear, and natural disasters. Traditional inspections often miss early signs of damage such as microcracks or material fatigue.

To overcome these limitations, A-IoT (Autonomous Internet of Things) systems are proposed. These systems use energy-neutral devices (ENDs) to monitor physical parameters like temperature, humidity, vibration, and structural strain. Unlike wired or battery-powered solutions, A-IoT devices are easier to install, require less maintenance, and can operate autonomously over long periods—even in remote or hard-to-access locations.

By enabling real-time, continuous data collection, this approach improves damage detection, risk assessment, and maintenance planning, ultimately enhancing bridge safety, extending service life, and reducing costs.
