Holographic Teaching

One of the biggest promises of the next decade is that immersive communication, holographic telepresence and XR will become our default way of communication. Via holographic telepresence, it is possible to realise a truly 3600 high-resolution virtual presence of individuals whilst physically being at a different location – for example, appearing to be in the class while being at home or at the office and enhancing teacher-student interactions in e-learning classes with a quality of interaction very close to reality. PoC1 will emulate a scenario (see Figure 1.11) where the teacher provides the lecture at home/university office/etc., while the students physically attending the class can watch the teacher’s holographic entity delivering the lesson. The content to display to the students will be obtained using real-time capture (using 2-3 Kinect Cameras for motion tracking), transmission (using 6G), and 3D rendering techniques. The recorded data (e.g., Human Skeleton and RGDB data) will be streamed to the cloud for point cloud merging and 3D reconstruction. The students can view the 3D reconstruction as a hologram (with or without the use of AR/VR glasses) and provide auditory questions back to the teacher. The teacher will be able to see and hear the students through his/her laptop. The content to display to the teacher will be captured through the students’ smartphone camera/microphone.
