LCEVC for Enhanced 6G-XR Holographic Streaming Services

The 'LCEVC for Enhanced 6G-XR Holographic Streaming Services' experiment advanced holographic communication by successfully integrating the MPEG-5 Low Complexity Enhancement Video Coding (LCEVC) standard. By augmenting existing H.264/AVC codecs, this project demonstrated improved efficiency for real-time, high-resolution immersive applications on the 6G-XR infrastructure while ensuring backward compatibility.
The key technical results validated by this project are:

  • Bandwidth Optimisation: Achieved a -30.93% BD-Rate (VMAF) reduction compared to the H.264/AVC baseline, preserving visual quality with efficiency approaching that of HEVC.
  • Computational Efficiency: Demonstrated HEVC-like quality with only a +38.6% CPU increase over H.264, significantly outperforming the +123.3% overhead required by HEVC.
  • Latency Validation: Confirmed the solution is viable for real-time XR, measuring acceptable end-to-end latencies for 1080p streams (156.23 ms) despite a measurable increase over the baseline.
  • System Integration: Delivered a functional GStreamer-based prototype ("Lynx" plugin) and WebAssembly client, demonstrating a real-time, LCEVC-enhanced holographic service over the 6G-XR infrastructure using QUIC/WebTransport.
