FSXR - Real time Fluid Simulation Rendering for XR via 5G O RAN

The FSXR project demonstrates how high fidelity fluid simulation can be made accessible in Extended Reality (XR) learning environments by offloading computation to a remote server and streaming the resulting visualisations over a high performance 5G O-RAN network. Using the University of Oulu’s 5GTN infrastructure, the project evaluates real time simulation rendering on consumer XR devices such as Meta Quest 3 and smartphones, enabling interactive science education, engineering training, and public outreach without the need for expensive high performance hardware at the learner’s site.

This approach allows students and professionals to explore complex fluid phenomena immersively, whether in classrooms, training centres, or remote learning setups, improving engagement and comprehension. FSXR’s architecture can be adapted to various STEM topics and scaled to multiple educational institutions.
