Internet of Sense
The Internet of Sense area encompasses use cases heavily based on immersive (eXtended Reality) in a wide sense: users of these applications enjoy a full immersion of their senses (visual, sound and also touch) into a scene that is not (or not only) the physical world around them. The information-driven by these senses may be captured from the real world at a distant location (telepresence), generated from a computer model (virtual reality), or a combination of both. The requirements for the network to provide a realistic and credible immersion are very high: audiovisual information, delivered through a Head Mounted Display, must be of high quality and extremely reliable to avoid breaking the illusion of immersion. The touch information, driven to haptic devices (vests, gloves, etc.), must also be delivered with high reliability and accurately synchronised with the visual and auditive signals. The latency, therefore, is also critical for these scenarios, especially if applications are bidirectional and communication-oriented.
The vertical markets where this is applicable are countless: entertainment, games, movies, simulation, training, communication, culture, healthcare, and even social integration of people with disabilities. Our preferred focus, though, is multi-disciplinary ese cases with a human focus at their heart.
