VRU protection at a smart intersection

Urban intersections represent critical junctures within the smart city ecosystem, where the seamless flow of traffic intersects with the paramount need to ensure the safety of Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs), including pedestrians, cyclists, and others. This integrated use case proposes the implementation of Distributed Integrated Sensing and Communication (DISAC) as a cornerstone technology to enhance traffic management and significantly improve the safety of VRUs at urban intersections. To technically implement the Smart Traffic Management and VRU Protection at Smart Intersections use case, the advanced capabilities of the proposed DISAC system architecture can leverage several key components as for the 6G network infrastructure, AI algorithms for connected vehicles and smartphones, and IoT sensors and devices deployment (including LIDAR, radar, video cameras, and environmental sensors). This integrated system aims to achieve a harmonious balance between optimising traffic flow and safeguarding VRUs. This dual objective is facilitated through a comprehensive framework integrating communication-based sensing with other sensing modalities. This multifaceted approach ensures a rich, real-time data collection and analysis process that underpins traffic management and safety systems.
